Our Actions Have Weight

Our Actions Have Weight

We are but men walking along this path, with no road map, or knowledge of tomorrows fore comings. The hope we have in the struggles of this world is only found in a name, Jesus Christ. We fumble along the walk and even when we are beaten down to the ground; even when the world is unfair, and even when it seems like everything, we’ve built crumbles around us, there is still hope in the power of Jesus. We can’t always see the light through the storm, but it’s always there. The struggle we have to get up the next day, and continue to push forward must be contained and set aside. The plans for our future is known by our Father alone, and we cannot from our tiny viewpoint say with certainty we know what will come tomorrow. We must not allow fear to dictate our actions, nor shall we allow that fear to destroy our resolve to trust in our Heavenly Father.

Something very precious was taken from me recently, and I must trust that even in the hardest of days, Christ has something better in store for me. Christ will use this unfortunate tragedy in my life and a new path, a better plan would be made clear. Nevertheless, the pain I feel is very real. The struggle of course is a challenge, one that will take time to overcome. In my life there have been few things I have been proud of myself about, and loosing something in my life that I found so important, is beyond tough. In 2004 I was on a nice little walk, a pack that weighed around 70 pounds, and very little sleep. Up till the little walk, I had not had much in the weight of protein, or nutrition, and the odds of completing such a trek were small. After several hours of struggle, turning a corner and seeing the building I had called home for over 20 weeks straight in front of me. The tears fell from my eyes out of pride for myself, that I had accomplished something I did not believe was possible, and something so many had told me I would fail. In a short time, I would stand at attention and be granted the right to carry my cross sabers. I would hold my head high and beam with self-pride. I never became prideful, but I had a new self-respect I had not known before. When I was wounded in the war and my career would end before my eyes, I felt lost, and I remained lost for many years.

Eventually I would find my path, but it would take several years. I would struggle for years to come till yet again the world as I knew it crumbled beneath my feet. I would yet again find myself unsure of my path, but a short time later the path was made clear. I found a place I would eventually call home. When I believed I had found a new place, a place for me to truly serve, that was short lived. I guess the point I’m trying to make is, life can suck, life can be unfair, life can be difficult as putting it mildly, but no matter what words describe the challenges faced, we must always remember who’s still sitting on the throne, and who is still in control. Relieving ones self of the responsibility, the need and desire to remain in control is vastly needed to be at peace. We are not in control, and we are not in charge. While we do have a say in how we manage our situations, and we do have a say into some of the circumstances we find ourselves, we are only in charge of our own personal actions and how we react in any given situation. In all places we find ourselves we must ask, and truly pray on it, what would Jesus do? What we do and how we do it will either represent Christ or the other guy. We always have a choice, and that choice will reflect Jesus in our heart. Be conscious of your choices, be respectful of the power you have to hold Christ in your heart, and in your actions reflect Christ to those in your circle. Be slow to action, and think about those actions first. Actions may have a wider effect then you may know, and because of that, as a Christian we must be more cautious then that of the world. Much like the ability to lift Thors hammer we must be worthy. Who are we underneath is represented by our actions and how we choose to respond to difficult circumstances? Will you lift the cross, or let the world blind you?

Facing Down the Cosmic Bully

Facing Down the Cosmic Bully

Life, is full of its ups and downs. Scripture is clear about where our blessings come from. James 1:1717 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” If our gifts come from the Lord, then what about our misery? Misery is a strange thing because it can come from more then one place. We are often our own source of misery but aside from ourselves making poor life choices, the Devil is truly the biggest cosmic bully around. How do we stand up to a bully that big? What chance do we have when we are facing down a bully of that size? If we are to believe in the fundamental fact that Jesus Christ overcame death, and He saved our souls from eternal damnation, we must also believe that there are forces of both light and dark all around us. The spiritual realm although we cannot see it, is very real. Angels the forces for God, and demons, the forces for the Devil are constantly at war all around us. For those who are more in tune with their relationship with God they can sense when the forces of the Devil are around. It’s a lot like the Matrix, you can’t see it, but you know it’s everywhere within the world around you. You can see it when you take out the landlord’s garbage, or even when you pay your taxes.

We are in this world, but we are commanded, for those who follow Christ are not to conform to the world. The world is sin, and we must resist the temptations that come to us. Being in this world as a Christian invites troubles into your life. The Devil will use anything and everyone to dissuade you from giving your heart to Jesus, or if you have given your heart to Jesus, to make you doubt that relationship. The Devil is the ultimate bully, and he is jealous of our relationship with the Father. He might be a child throwing a tantrum, but even a child can cause a lot of damage when they have angelic powers. Don’t forget that just because the Devil was cast out from Heaven, doesn’t mean he was stripped of his powers. Angels and Demons are very much real, and just because we can’t see them, doesn’t mean the war isn’t waging all around us. The war is not for land, or resources, the war is for our very souls.

We know that the battle wages every day, and as each of us is filled with both the spirit and the sins of the flesh, it stands to reason that sometimes the pull of the flesh will win. This doesn’t mean the draws to a person; it means the part that is alienated by God. The flesh is the rebellious, stubborn, and often disrespectful side of us that refuses correction, and to acknowledge ones own faults. We are governed by sin at times, and we can fight it, but it’s inevitable that we will fail, and fail often. It’s that reason that Christ died on the cross, His blood shed for us, because there was no scenario where we could enter into heaven on our own merits or works.

What do we do when we find ourselves in the midst of a spiritual battle, and how do we know what it is? First you must ask yourself if you’ve ever been tempted to do something you know is wrong? Tempted to smoke cigarettes, tempted to steal something, tempted to lie, tempted by sexual desire, all these things are signs of spiritual warfare. The Devil uses our desires of the flesh, uses others, uses sickness and diseases, anything and everything to try and wedge a gap between you and the Father. The Devil and his legion of demons are always pulling people, pushing people, and causing mischief all around the world. He tries anything he can to raise doubts, to cast blame, even to the point of lying to us making us feel like we are worthless.

A movie I’ve been watching lately that I can’t seem to get enough of is Avengers: Infinity War. I was thinking about Thanos and his motives for doing what he does. While Thanos may actually be right around the fate of the universe he’s missing one important aspect, faith. There’s one scene where Thanos is talking to Gamora about needing to be the one to fix things, and she tells him “You don’t know that.” Thanos is misguided in his methods and no matter if you agree or disagree with him, he is a cosmic bully playing god and he has no business doing so.

(Spoilers Ahead)

Even though Thanos seems to be unstoppable there’s a point where Thor’s new Ax, Stormbreaker cuts through Thano’s power and actually stabs him in the chest. Recently as I’ve been watching that, I have been thinking about our own fight against our biggest cosmic bully, the Devil. If the Devil attacks us, do we have our own Stormbreaker to cut through his attack and stab him in the chest? The answer is yes, absolutely! Stormbreaker is essentially the power of the Holy Spirit. We know that we have the Armor of God, Ephesians 6:10-18. “Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;” This verse ends with prayer, telling us that in all things we must be willing to pray. Stormbreaker at the heart the word of God that cuts through Sin, desire, and any attack the Devil may throw at us. No matter the direction the attack comes from, whether it be through people, or sickness, or even our own sinful failings, the Word of God has all the answers. It in itself is the ultimate weapon against the biggest bully around. While we don’t have the power to be rid of Satan, we do have the power to fight him off, to force him back, and for a time have him removed from our presence.

During the temptation of Christ, we don’t see Christ using force to remove Satan, we see Christ using the word of God. Christ could have used force to remove the Devil, but since we don’t have that power, it serves as a lesson to each of us, how to fight on the battlefield beyond what we can see. We must never underestimate our own abilities because scripture tells us, Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”If God is with us we then have the power within us to withstand the attacks of Satan, and cast him away from us as Jesus once did. It may not be as flashy or glamorous as Thor flying above Wakanda throwing his beautiful new toy, cutting through Thanos’s blast and stabbing him in the chest, but never the less, we do have the power to stand up to our tormentor. Don’t underestimate yourself and never give up the fight. As long as we continue to believe in God and trust in Him, we will always have hope. One day our time to fight will be over and we will be called home. We will leave the fight for the next person after us, and all we can do is hope we have passed on our knowledge and love of Christ for the next generation to come. Have faith and in this spiritual battle that wages on, don’t forget to Love, Forgive, and live in Hope. In the battle here on earth, one thing we need to remember is there is no need to fear. There is nothing the Devil can do to remove the ransom paid for us. So long as we remain faithful to our Lord and Savior, we may suffer in this life, but this life is only temporary.

Behold The Power of Thor

Behold The Power of Thor

“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” The inscription on the fictional hammer of Mjolnir. Thor possesses this hammer and the power is power within. When his powers were stifled by Odin in the first Thor movie, he was sent on a journey to discover himself. He needed to discover the true nature of a leader, of a King, and what it meant to truly be worthy of the gift of Thor. What are we worthy of before God of the universe? The answer is absolutely nothing. We deserve nothing but its through Grace we are gifted eternal life. When Thor betrays his father Odin, the King, he is cast out, stripped of his powers, stripped of his rightful place in Asgard. Odin being a loving and benevolent King and father did not send Thor to Earth without the possibility to return. He enchanted the hammer Mjolnir to give Thor back his power if and when Thor displayed himself worthy, to submit to the power of Thor which was to be kind to others, to be selfless towards others, and to be humble, all traits to make a great future King. In our walk with Christ we are told nothing we do in this life would ever make us worthy of the perfection of Heaven. Heaven cannot have a black mark within it, so in order to be worthy, we are washed, cleansed by the Blood of Christ, and we are made new, burning away the flesh of old, and becoming a new creature, submitting ourselves, humbly before the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:17“17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

What does it mean to be unworthy? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Unworthy as “a : lacking in excellence or value : poor, worthless b : base, dishonorable” In scripture, we see what we are to in the presence of God, Isaiah 64:6But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like [a]filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.” When you look up this verse in the Hebrew it actually means our righteousness is like a dirty menstrual rag. The rag a woman uses to clean herself during her monthly cycle is how we are compared. That’s pretty low, and yet we see our salvation, and grace regardless of what we are worthy of. Ephesians 2:8-10 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Much like Thor we have failed to be worthy of the kingdom. We however have hope in Jesus Christ, as Thor had hope in the hammer. In the Old Testament of the Bible the Jews looked forward to their savior, they where holding out for a hero to save them for their enemies, and when the day came, they rejected the truth because it wasn’t what they wanted. Thor regained his strength, his power through the change within himself. The Hammer gave him his strength back, but the hammer isn’t what gifted him his true power. The cross is what the Jews looked forward to, and we as Jews and Gentiles look back towards the cross, it’s not the cross itself that gave us our hope, it’s the blood of Christ that was spilt. We were washed with that blood, and since then we have the power of the Holy Spirit flowing through us. We must only believe in that power, believe in the sacrifice made for us to be saved from eternal death, and be given eternal life.

When Thor’s hammer is broken by his opposite Hela, he feels despair, lost, powerless, but in time, he found the power didn’t come from the symbol, it didn’t come from the hammer, no, the power was inside him all along. We don’t get our power and strength from the cross; we get the power from the Holy Spirit of Christ, which flows through us. We don’t need to carry a cross to have the power, we don’t need to eat the bread and drink the wine to have the power, those are merely symbols of the power given, the power of Love, Mercy, Forgiveness. We are gifted with Eternal salvation as brothers, sisters, children, of the King. We are God’s hands and feet, and we work not for ourselves, but to show the glory of God within us. We share the good news of Christ because when we submit to the Lord, and we love Jesus for everything done for us, we should be excited and unable to contain our joy. Much like Thor would make the thunder come when he had strong emotions, we to should bring the sunshine and rainbows everywhere we go, because we have the power of the Holy Spirit, and we must allow Jesus Christ to work through us in all we say and Do. Don’t let the Devil break your cross, don’t let the Devil destroy your world, stand up, stand tall, and remember that those whom attack us “know not what they do.” So forgive them, and pray for them, and love them regardless, and you will inherit the Kingdom to live in peace, and joy for eternity. Perfection is what awaits us, and we to, like Thor, are forgiven for our insolence, our disobedience, our faithlessness, and our sins that make us dirty. Isn’t that a wonderful thing, to have hope knowing we could never earn it because we don’t have it? Jesus paid our ransom for us, He paid for the ticket into Heaven, and asked only one thing in return, Love and follow Christ, and Love your Neighbor. Simple, and yet so many will never submit to a higher authority, and so many will never know the love and grace of God.
