When God Puts the Hammer Down

There have been times when God has seen it fit to deal judgment to mankind. The first judgment was when Eve and Adam ate the fruit form the tree of knowledge. As sin entered the world the paradise of Eden could not house any dark stains. Mankind quickly forgot the graces of God and became corrupt and evil. Later God found that in order to rid the world of such corruption he must rain down judgment on the whole of the earth. The flood was a earthly do over, which as far as humanity goes, we don’t deserve more chances yet Gods grace always comes.

Genesis 19:4-5“Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.” God planned to destroy Sodom, but Abraham pleaded with God to spare the city if any were righteous. God agreed to Abrahams plea and sent two angels When the city surrounded the house with what appears to be a custom of the city to rape newcomers to the city, God’s angels found one man’s family worthy of saving. That family was spared and sent away prior to the destruction of city. God’s wrath was rained down on Sodom like a cosmic hammer.

We cannot expect to live our lives without consequence anyway we want to. We have to assume that judgment will come when we get to the point where God doesn’t believe there is a way to save us. While we are saved through grace, there comes a time when purging fire must come. When the United States was founded it was done so as a God fearing nation. If we continue to move down a path of sinful, hatred, life of flesh, we cannot expect to not see judgment of the Lord.

When I think of the idea of a hammer falling down upon mankind, I think of the scene in The Avengers where Thor and Captain America are fighting in the woods. Thor dropped Mjolnir down upon Cap’s shield an explosion of energy sent a shockwave through the forest dropping trees all around them. At some time a tipping point will come when we will have to choose to fight for what is right, or fall to the hammer of the Lord. The choice will be ours, but time of course will tell. God may just let us destroy ourselves. The only hope we truly have is Jesus Christ.

I can hardly believe so much time has passed since I published my first post on February 23^rd2017. At first my only intention was to work through some of my own personal struggles in my life and how using scripture would help me do that. As that mission slowly evolved now it is no longer about my own need to deal with demons, it’s about helping others through troubled waters. Of course on occasion I find myself struggling during a particular post, but on some level there will always be a symbiotic relationship to what I post and how I feel. I can honestly say, the thought of writing 600 posts in less then two years is truly something else. I have a hard time fathoming the amount of hours I’ve put into study to get this far. I have an equal hard time considering the consistent ability to somehow post a full message each and every day. Looking back all I can do is attribute my success to God. I could never have done it without the support of my best friend Glen, and my many followers. In recent weeks I have picked up nearly a dozen new followers, and one stands above the rest. A new suggestion has been made that I start working on a VLOG. While I have mixed feelings on it, I am excited to explore a new direction for my blogs. In the last year and some change I have had 6450 views, 4023 visitors in 2017 and 8181 views, and 4111 visitors in 2018 so far. With over 100 countries it’s pleasing to know maybe in some way I’ve touched lives in this world, knowing I’ve made a difference for God’s kingdom.

With my new path leading me towards full time ministry, I have to ask myself, ‘am I doing enough?’ For now, I am a full time student, I am studying the Word every day, and I am ministering as often as I can. For my 600^thpost I want to focus on Psalm 23

Psalm 23

“The Lord is my shepherd;

I shall not [a]want.

2 He makes me to lie down in [b]green pastures;

He leads me beside the [c]still waters.

3 He restores my soul;

He leads me in the paths of righteousness

For His name’s sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil;

For You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

You anoint my head with oil;

My cup runs over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

All the days of my life;

And I will [d]dwell in the house of the Lord

[e]Forever.”

At 600 posts I have found myself tired. I have plenty of reserve topics to write about, I struggle now to find the motivation to do so. When I can’t seem to get up and get motivated I think back to this passage. First and foremost the Lord is our shepherd. We shall not want, this translates to we shall never go without. We shall always have what we need because the Lord provides for us always. No matter where we are in our lives we know that there’s one thing we can hold onto that the Devil can never take, our joy. When we close our eyes no matter how deeply into the storm are, we need to only picture a place of peace, and Christ will fill our heart with that peace. The Lord is always with us and hears us always. We have hope knowing that we are loved with no end. We remember that David’s first job was a shepherd boy. This was not considered to be a glamorous job, and he showed no shame remembering his origins. We are the flock of Jesus Christ, and we know that a shepherd will always protect us when the wolves come in the night. We don’t always know what we need. We often think we do, and we always knows what we want, but like a parent God knows our needs. He makes us lie down when we need, he leads us to water when we need, this showing that God will always provide for us. When we are hurt, God always restores our souls. He provides us comfort with truth, and grace. God is tender when we need a soft hand, and fierce when we need a disciplining hand, but always in love.

I remember in my military training the once place we never wanted to be was down in a valley. This is a choke point, a place where army’s go to die. An enemy that has the high ground always as the advantage, and the fear of being surrounded it can seem like there is no hope, but even here where it seems David is making this comment based on a memory, we remember the other job he had, and that was a soldier. David was a decorated military strategist and he had to be to survive. He talks about being in the midst of certain death, and yet knowing God was always by his side. David knows that he only walks through the valley, not that he will remain there. He knows that the shepherd leads and we must trust that the shepherd knows best, even when that hope seems lost. We must remember to trust in our Lord that no matter what we face in this life, we are but guests on this earth, and we’re just passing through. Those of us with the hope and knowledge of Jesus Christ knows that there’s nothing that this world can do to us to take away the gift Jesus gave to us, and we know that we to will one day join Christ in glory.

As I consider the next step for my blog, I expect God to continue to bless me, and I will continue to grow if for no other reason then to serve the Lord. I am here to serve, and as I now walk towards a path of service, I know that there’s nothing my God cannot do. I know that even a sinner like me can be used to bring glory to the only name that matters, Jesus Christ. To the 600 posts behind me now, God willing we will see what He has planned for the next 600. I am blessed with the support I have, and I am blessed with my church family. I have friends that support me, and one friend in particular that while new, she’s been incredibly supportive of my blog even though we have fundamental differences in our faith. Alesha, Thank You! Sacrifice

Sacrifice

What would you be willing to give up for Christ? If you knew then entrance into Heaven was to give up something, a sacrifice of some great importance to you, what would that look like? When you look back at the Apostle Paul and you consider what he gave up, his sacrifice was extensive. To understand completely you first need to understand who Paul was. Prior to his conversion on the road to Damascus, he was a high ranking Pharisee. He had studied under some of the greatest priests, and had notoriety of celebrity proportion. Paul had power, he had authority, he had money, and he had a life of luxury. What would possess a man to give up all that for a life of beatings, of poverty, of torture, of prison time, in what we would call a dungeon by today’s standards. Paul would have had a life of comfort and as he had a reputation cruelty and hatred towards Christians he wouldn’t have much to worry about in the ways of suffering. That’s not what God had planned for him however. As he was known prior to Damascus as Saul, his transformation seen in Acts was not the following of someone looking to better their life with hope. Saul was living large and gave everything up because of what God had done to him on that dirt road. He would loose his sight for three days, and in the years following he would face persecution by those whom he at one time would have been looked up to. He gave up everything of comfort imaginable for a life of uncertainty, pain, and suffering. No one would do this if they weren’t absolutely sure of the truth.

Psalm 54:66 I will freely sacrifice to You; I will praise Your name, O Lord, for it is good.” David knew as King, he was promised the position by God, and by God it would be taken away. We see David fail in his responsibilities as King, and his choices lead to dire consequences. But in all things, David would understand eventually the error of his ways, and he realized he must sacrifice the sin nature that dwells within the heart, and trust in the Lord.

Isaiah 1:11“To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats.” God is telling Israel He doesn’t burnt offerings, he’s not looking for the outward symbols of sacrifice, what He wants is the inward sacrifice. He wants to see the hearts of his people change. To give up ones self to become something else.

Mark 12:33“And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, [a]with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” It’s not a matter of what we do for the Lord. Someone can go to a soup kitchen every day and volunteer. They can go to Church and sing some songs, even give some sermons, but it’s about what is on the Heart, and God knows the heart.

1 Corinthians 5:7“Therefore [a]purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed [b]for us.” This is referring to dough, the leaven, used to make bread. This is saying the old dough is bad, it’s sour, and it must be thrown away. The new bread, is that created by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and knowing He is the only truth, the only way to life everlasting. We begin to understand what is meant by sacrifice.

Again when we think about what Christ asked of his followers, drop your nets, drop whatever it was you were doing and instead, pick up your cross and follow “me”. Christ was asking these men to leave the certainty of a solid days work, their homes, money, food, in exchange for truth. Some of the Apostils like Matthew who was a wealthy tax collector gave up a lot to follow Christ. Matthew much like Paul had money, and power, and a nice home, nice clothing, and never had to worry much about the ways of suffering. It takes a lot for someone to give up a life of luxury for a life of uncertainty and eventually pain and suffering.

I have often thought of superheroes as being good examples of righteousness looks like. This is especially true when you look at some of the more squeaky clean heroes, Superman, Spiderman, Captain America, etc. While there may not be as much of a physical toll for each of these characters, there are certainly emotional tolls; this is particularly true with their personal relationships. Something is always sacrificed when duty calls and the costume comes out. For characters like Batman, the toll is emotional, and physical. Bruce Wayne literally gives up his body to fight the good fight. So what is it that we sacrifice in our own lives? Do we give up our time to work for charities? Do we give up our money to tithes? What about our freedom? Would we be willing to give up our home, our jobs, our life in the name of Jesus Christ? For many people there are limits, there’s what’s okay to give up in the name of Jesus, and then what’s not, and sadly, I think the same goes within our own hearts. We are willing to give fractions of our heart to Jesus, but if we’re honest about it, do we truly give 100%? I think this is something we as Christians truly need to examine. To truly submit, there is going to be a little suffering along the way.

When we are truly ready to submit to the Lord, the idea of wealth, power, fame, control, the very essence of what was promised to Christ in the temptation of Satan, we would be more willing to endure that of Isaiah 50:6“I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.” No one truly wants to be beaten, or ridiculed, or imprisoned, but to sacrifice means, to give up the desires of the flesh, to be apart of this world, so that in Heaven we would be in the grace of the one true King. Jesus Christ came to serve his people, He came to be more then just a Leader, but to show us the nature of love, and the nature of humility. Matthew 20:28“just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” The sovereign King of the universe allowed Himself to be beaten, tortured, spat on, ridiculed, nailed to a cross, and give up His life for us sinners.

Micah 6:8“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love [a]mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” We must learn to be humble, to lower ourselves before the Lord. We must learn to put God first, and then ourselves second. We must learn to trust in the Lord’s plan, and walk where we must, do what we ought to do, and serve where we are led to serve.

Do not mistake my words, I am not saying in any way that if you’ve not be flogged, or beaten, or became wealthy, or live in protective walls that you are somehow not sacrificing for God. What I am saying is make sure whatever you do, you do to bring Glory to our Father. We may not have physical scars of what we sacrifice for the Lord, but there should be some signs of that sacrifice. Paul gave up everything for what he KNEW to be the truth, and gave up everything for it to include his life. If Paul is willing to give up so much, what are we willing to give up? Galatians 6:17“17 From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.” What scars are we willing to bear in the name of Christ?

For me a reminder of sacrifice is my Gideons Bible. Just looking at it, you can see how worn it is, and for me this is a symbol of my willingness to sacrifice for the Lord. Doing what’s right even in the face of danger and facing our own potential mortality in the process, to put ourselves in harms way to be there for a brother. This beat up old bible is truly one of my most prized possessions. It wasn’t read as much as it should have been, but there are marks in its pages finding scripture to encourage during time of war. The whole Bible shows signs of abuse and water damage. That Bible was with me on every single mission in my left breast pocket of my uniform right under my ballistic vest. It was with me when I jumped into the water to retrieve the body of a friend killed in action. It was with me the day I witnessed Hell on earth. Every hot summer day, or cold winter night, it was by my side. That Bible is a representation of my body which I gladly put on the line to do what I felt was right in the name of Jesus Christ. Making a difference in a part of the world that hated me just for the flag I wore, and who was willing to kill me on live television. I carry my own scars in the name of Christ, and I shall certainly earn more before I go home in glory.

Rainbows

Rainbows

Genesis 9:13-14 “13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;”

I’ve always thought rainbows were beautiful, but not till I started reading Genesis did I realized they were mentioned very early in scripture. Now we know that science can explain what a rainbow is, light refracting through raindrops, but at this point in Scripture Noah and his family are just leaving the Ark after the flood. As this represents the covenant between God and mankind, I also look at it another way. It doesn’t always happen of course, but usually a rainbow signifies the end of the storm. Even in the movie the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy wishes she could go to a magical place, over the rainbow. We sometimes think of rainbows as somehow magical, of beautiful happenings in nature that are quite the spectacle to see.

No matter how we look at a rainbow, they bring joy, or happiness, even if it’s just the spectacle of them being in the sky. Rainbows are a reminder of Gods love and grace for us. No matter how bad the storm was, if we look to the sky and see a bright rainbow we know the storm is over. While the rainbow is a symbol of the covenant with man to never again flood the whole of the earth, we are lucky enough to have a new covenant with God. After the fall from Eden, mankind could not be in the presence of God. We were no longer pure, but worst then a dirty diaper before our Lord. God set forth a plan that would take hundreds of years. When we think God moves too slowly for us, we truly don’t realize how God works. God doesn’t play the short game, and while on occasion he may answer our prayers in the here and now, more often then not God is working things out for the future.

God spent 400 years in silence between the Old and New Testament. In that time there were moving pieces on the board, and God is patient while we are not. We are a people of wanting change right now. We want fast food prayers, you order, God delivers. But that doesn’t work and God just laughs at our foolishness. When I think back at Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, she was dreaming of being anywhere other then on the farm. While things on the farm weren’t perfect, she was trying to escape her woes instead of putting forth the effort to fix them. We do the same thing in many different ways. In the last year, I have been a part of a social app and during my time there I have found a new escape I hadn’t really considered, on line roll playing. These roll playing conversations often consume someone’s life. There is no desire to talk to the person you’re roll playing with about real life, it’s always just the fantasy world. This is a person’s ‘over the rainbow’. So many people today find escape in drugs, or alcohol, on line roll playing, or video games. Addictions of all kinds have popped up on this planet all because fiction for many is better then reality. It’s a sad state of affairs we find our selves in when we no longer want to face any problems but instead turn to means to deaden the internal pain, dull our minds, and kick the can down the road for yet another day.

Sadly it isn’t just reality people are hiding from, it’s all negative feelings or emotions. We’ve become a society that at the first sign of trouble, or the first time someone’s brings up negative emotions, or ‘vibes’ as it’s called today, people run away. I have watched several people personally leave our ‘acquaintanceship’ because I had a bad day and wanted to talk about it. People only want to hear positive things; they don’t want to be bothered with reality. So long as life is rainbows and puppies they are happy, and anyone who threatens that is expendable. Because of this people no longer build relationships, they build acquaintances, and barely that. In the last 7 years I have been to several weddings, and I’m sad to say that all but two have already ended in divorce. During the wedding the rainbow seemed so bright and vibrant, and sometime over the course of their incredibly short marriages, that rainbow became gray and disappeared. It’s sad to think about how many people end their marriages these days. While I don’t know all the details of their divorces, those details are irrelevant. People have stopped living their lives in the way God says we should live, and we have stopped putting God first in our marriages. Sadly those kinds of relationships are about self, and not about the other person. When we ask what’s in it for me, or how does this make me feel, and we no longer ask ourselves what we can do for our spouse, we will grow in resentment, and heartache. We cannot continue wishing for what’s over the rainbow. We must face reality and live according to God’s will for us.

I’m not saying you can’t dream, but especially when it comes to relationships, focus on what those relationships are really supposed to be. Find some happiness in your life the way it is and make that flourish. No the grass is not always greener on the other side. Stop taking for granted the gifts you have right now. Embrace them, and enjoy them. You don’t want your life to become stagnant though, so balance tomorrow and today. Enjoy your sunshine, enjoy the rainbow, and remember God’s always with us each and every day. Give thanks for another sunrise, and the many, many blessings we have. Hope in Jesus Christ came slower then the Jews wanted, but it wasn’t their timetable, it’s God’s. Trust in God, and focus on what you can change, and pray for the things you can’t.

Take The Compliment!

What is it with our society that accepting compliments has become so difficult? I’ve been putting a lot of thought into this as I have recently begun getting more compliments then I’m used to. There are two areas in my life in which I get compliments, writing my blog, and my photography. I think sometimes compliments come infrequently and sometimes we put our expectations to treat the flesh rather then trying to please God. When we put our focus on why we do things for the pleasure of bring glory to God, we can take the edge off. For many months I hoped my blog traffic would increase and it would become popular. I placed my value on how good my blog was by how many people viewed each day. Even now, I get very few comments, and some days I struggle with not achieving the goals I had set for myself.

My photography is something of an interesting position for me. While I take a ton of photos and post them since I don’t get much feedback about them, I usually assume they are average or below. Because of these things I have often questioned both my writing and photography and in that, I lost focus about what was important. Bringing glory to God and talking about God word wasn’t my inside priority, and when I lost sight of that, I questioned myself, and what I was doing. I began to think of quitting, and in that time I struggled a great deal.

My blog posts now reach almost 600 entries and when I receive a compliment I don’t really know how to react. I have realized lately that I don’t take compliments well. I spent so much time being told I was worthless, that I wasn’t good enough, that I’d never be special. I’ve spent time rejecting compliments with my heart while accepting them with a smile. I can’t say I’m proud of this, but after years and years of negative reinforcement it’s hard to reprogram the mind. Proverbs 15:13“13 A merry heart makes a cheerful [a]countenance, But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.” It’s clear I must change my heart, and focus on the glory to God instead of the glory of myself.

I often hear people scoff at the idea of a compliment. I know I’m not alone in this aspect, but I say to all those out there it’s important to realize that God loves you, and as such, you’re important. You are royalty and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven and you can’t place your self worth in the hands of fallible people. People will always be cruel, and selfish, but on the occasion you encounter someone who’s willing to compliment you, give you something wonderful as a compliment, humble yourself and accept it.

Remember it’s important to give compliments as well. It’s important to show others how much you care, and that you appreciate them. Romans 15:2“Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.” Be kind, and gentle. Lift up others, and show them the love of God. Show them love because we are commanded to do so. Dream big and don’t let anyone stifle your dreams. Love yourself, and allow yourself to let others show you kindness. This is hard for some, as I know because it’s hard for me, but it’s important to put negative feelings away and trust what’s being told to you is true. God Said and We Must Trust

Genesis 2:1818 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

Some days when I feel alone, when I feel discouraged, I think back to what God said and I know that in this season I may be alone, but I must put my faith in God that He has a plan bigger than I can see. It’s not easy going through life without the things we desire most, but if something is truly good for us the Lord will provide when the time is right. Being patient is one of the hardest things we as humans have to do. There are a lot of things I am patient with, but being alone is not one of them. While some people can go their entire lives alone, some people are wired for those human connections. Be strong in your faith, and trust in the Lord. Walk closely with Christ and listen to what the Holy Spirit is telling you. Find your purpose God has planned for you, and always trust in the process. God doesn’t make mistakes, and for every hardship, tragedy, struggle, God is with you working out the details. Do not loose hope, and do not despair, Jesus Christ is the truth, the way, the life. In his death we were given eternal hope, so never fear tomorrow, focus on today, and trust the plan. God

I Don’t Have The Answers

With so much pain in the world, and so much selfishness, I can honestly say I don’t have all the answers. I see people when they are low, and I see people when they are on top of the world, but the only answer I have is Jesus Christ. The only hope I have is knowing that I’m not alone and even at times when it feels like the whole world is against me, I know I have Christ in my corner. There’s never been a moment I have been without Christ. I have been through Hell, and I’ve seen horrible things happen to people all around me. The only answers I have are those I find in the Holy Book. I have walked this walk for so long and doing it my own way only led to disaster. Trying to rebuild from catastrophe after catastrophe is exhausting. While I may not have all the answers, I can say with authority what not to do. I can say what I’ve ended up with, and if I’m being completely honest I have lost nearly everything, twice. I know that Satan pushes us, Sin pushes us, the world pushes us, and God pulls us. We are fools if we don’t seek Godly counsel in our paths. Proverbs 12:15 15“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.”In my walk I found I had gotten lazy. I put off going to church, I put off my studies, and shortly after my life fell apart. As soon as I put down my armor the attack came and I was ill prepared to face it. My lack of preparedness was evident as my fall from the tower I had built.

Life is hard, and it can be cruel and unforgiving. Mistakes can haunt us for the rest of our lives, and we sometimes have to live with the foolish decisions we’ve made. What I can say is we must turn to God in our foolishness and ask for forgiveness. We must repent with our hearts, and trust that God will take us just the way we are. When we accept Jesus into our lives, He changes us. We are reborn like the phoenix, the fire burns away the old self leaving what God put in us all along. 1 John 4:1“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” When we follow Christ we are often tested, and people may come into our lives as part of that test. We must realize that not everything is as it appears. Some things that may look like blessings on the surface may not truly be, and it’s up to us to test that. Do not be caught unawares. Be careful whom you become attached to. I have failed in this more time then I care to admit, and each time I have felt the sting of rejection, and it’s led me to a dark place inside myself. Not everyone we meet will lift us up, some are there to tear you down. It’s up to us to let scripture and the Holy Spirit guide us. When we stand apart from the world, it will be harder to find those to lift us up. Do not allow your loneliness to compromise your integrity for the companionship and lure of the flesh you so long for. Be earnest in your prayers to God, follow His plan for you, trust in Him, and submit yourself to know when the time is right, God will take care of you.

Snap, Crackle, What?

Have you ever been in physical pain? I’m betting most of you have been at some point. Yesterday, I was at my physical therapy appointment and we were working on a spot of pain in my mid back. The likely suspect was a rib that wasn’t quite in place. It seems between a fractured rib, and a damaged lung, two years ago it may not have set quite right. It occurs to me that one of the things we rarely understand is why we are afflicted with physical ailments, and how those pains can be used to glorify God. When I think about the passion of Christ, I think about pain, suffering beyond anything I could ever imagine. I think about the flesh being torn from bone, the lacerations, the tearing of muscle, and how agonizing that must have been. I don’t think I would be able to endure that kind of pain. I think about the drive one must have had to go through that voluntarily. I don’t think I would volunteer for the pain I have right now. But the love Christ showed us, knowing he could have stopped at any time, is truly showing grace upon humanity. Romans 8:18“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” The suffering we have today is nothing compared to what we will have in Heaven IF we know God, and know our savior Jesus Christ. While our physical pain may be an inconvenience, I give you this, do not let it become a roadblock, merely a speed bump. Pain doesn’t mean the end, it simply means different. While I’ve never watched the movie, much to my shame, the movie Soul Surfer comes to mind. A young woman, an amazing surfer was attacked by a shark and lost part of her arm. Instead of letting that destroy her hopes and dreams, she rose up, and learned to surf with only one arm. I have a friend who loves to surf, he lost his leg in Iraq and he surfs regularly with his prosthesis. While there are days he hurts, he doesn’t let it stop him from doing what he loves.

It occurs to me that we have a choice when it comes to getting older. We can complain about our physical pains, or we can find a way to overcome them. We can choose whether or not to let that pain be the victor over us. While some pain may be debilitating, I believe even then we can somehow use that situation to still glorify God. The whole idea is knowing Christ suffered, and we will too. We aren’t going to live a perfect pain free life, but we should truly be honored to know that when we follow Christ we are going to share in eternal blessing. 1 Peter 2:21“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” Knowing we follow in Christ’s steps is humbling. Knowing that we are given the opportunity to be with the King of the Universe and that we are loved so much that even though we are filthy sinners, that we will be made clean, that we will transform, and one day enter the gates of perfection for all eternity, is simply beautiful. The wonders of Heaven are far greater then our minds can comprehend, but when we think of it, we must grasp even a little so we may appreciate what we have here.

The pain we have now, is only for a little while in the scales of life eternal, so don’t loose hope. We know what awaits us, and we know that somehow the pain we have can be used to adore God, used to praise God, and we should never pass an opportunity to do so. There is a message to be shared in every situation if we take the time to examine scripture and our current condition and circumstance. Don’t loose hope, there is a better tomorrow ahead.

Emotionally Compromised

“There will always be storms, and emergencies, and chores to take care of in your day to day life. No matter how well we plan, or how careful we are there will always be just one more thing to take care of. We must always take time to rest and recharge. We must use that time to give thanks for our blessings, the grace we’ve been given, but also appreciate the hardships that come our way. The day to rest is commanded upon us, and we must allow ourselves time to reflect as God once did before all of creation. Our God shows us how to rest and leads by an example of its importance. Shall we not celebrate the day the Lord has marked as Holy and shall we not sing joyful songs and fellowship and truly find rest if not for one day a week? Rest today, for tomorrow’s burdens will be there tomorrow. Do not worry about them today.” AP

“I know you have pain because I feel it too, that doesn’t mean that Gods untrue.” AP We can’t and won’t always see the reason or reasons something goes wrong in our life. We can’t expect life to never hit a brick wall, or to fall on our faces. When my ex-wife left me and had an affair I found myself looking at my worst nightmare, and I fell down angry. I screamed, and cried to God angry, and I was so furious I literally saw red in my vision. What is it that causes us to turn our backs on God? Most people who turn Agnostic, or Atheist do so after suffering some kind of major catastrophe in their lives. I’d love to say this is simply just my opinion, but it isn’t. There are generally two kinds of people in this world. Those who after tragedy turn and grow closer to higher power, or those who curse and turn away from a higher power, so what are you? When bad things happened to you, were you the type to blame God, or turn to God?

In the last few weeks I have found myself facing hard questions. I have found myself having to listen and pray and shoulder the responsibility of being an ear. My first instinct is always to be try and fixing a problem. I have spent a large amount of my time in thought trying to create solutions to life’s problems. For me, and perhaps one of the hardest things I will ever have to learn in my path to ministry is how to shoulder that responsibility and never show the stress it crates on me. Not long ago I realized I had been impacted by something I had gone through and I found myself unable to be objective. Of course just like Starfleet Regulations 619 “Any command officer who’s emotionally compromised by the mission at hand, must resign said command.” I felt I had emotionally compromised and decided it was best for me to remove myself from the situation until such time I could regain composure, and be more effective. When you hit your emotional limit, where do you turn? Do you turn to hatred and build bitterness in your heart, or do you turn to God and understand the nature of sin?

CS Lewis once said “My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?” (C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity) We must understand the nature of our emotions. We often desire answers to the cruelty and malice of others. Someone once told me after a school shooting that there was no God because if there was how could He let innocent children be slaughtered? While painful, it’s hard to explain the nature of Sin to someone who’s already angry and bitter over the sins of the world. I know from my own experiences when I was emotionally upset, the last thing I wanted to hear was scripture. I wanted to be comforted, and more then anything I just wanted to yell and be heard.

When catastrophe strikes often times people need shoulders, not answers in the moment. There’s a time and place for answers, but before any counseling is done, we must evaluate the situation by ascertaining what mindset someone’s in. There is a time and place for scripture, and though that may be where we want to go, it may not always be the best time. As the Apostil Paul wrote in Romans 12:15 ^“Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” Sometimes showing love, and compassion, and just being an ear for someone going through a hard time is all the ministering they need. It’s easy to loose sight of that sometimes, and when you’re in ministry long enough it’s easy to become a little callous to the hardships of others. There’s another quote by C.S. Lewis “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains.” (C.S. Lewis) When scripture tells us God is with us always, we must always remember that when we laugh, God laughs. When we cry God cries. When we are happy God is happy, when we are sad God’s sad. When we suffer we must go to the Lord and share our sufferings with Him. But at the same time we must go to our friends and share our suffering with them. It’s in our times of need it gives those around us a chance to be there for someone, a chance to make a difference and show love and compassion. Many people who follow Christ feel that need, that desire, and not to share our feelings is simply depriving them a chance to share the gospel with a friend or loved one in need. When the time is right of course.

Romans 8:28“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” It takes a great deal of faith to look at tragedy and see the good in it. Sometimes we may not know or understand how any good could come from any issue. I have seen so much hurt, and death, and tragedies in my life I cannot begin to understand all of it. What I do understand is we have free will, and those around us have free will. God did not force neither of my ex wives to have affairs, but he also did not stop it. If he were to stop someone from making a choice that wouldn’t exactly be free will anymore. As long as there is sin in the world there will always be pain. As long as people are people there will always be conflict because no matter how upright or righteous we are we will never be perfect. We must trust that those who walk with the Lord will reap the benefits of it, and those who don’t will suffer the inevitable consequences. I don’t know what the purpose has been for me to go through everything I’ve gone through except to say I now have first hand knowledge of some pretty intense hardships. Having all those hardships behind me I will be able to relate and connect with those whom I encounter during my time as a crisis counselor. It’s this path I feel the embodiment of loving your neighbor comes into my life. I feel there are many different ways we can be there for others in their time of need, and this particular path is mine. I often found in my times of crisis I didn’t always have someone to turn too. I hope one day to change that. I hope one day I can be to someone what I wish I had.

If we truly want to understand the world we must understand the love of God. We must truly understand the sacrifice made for us because of one simple little world, that there’s nothing simple about, Love. Love is the only thing that can change this world. Love is the only thing that can heal a broken heart. Love is the only thing that provides comfort to the sick. Love is the only thing that’s truly worth living for. We are loved by Jesus Christ so we can walk through this world as ambassadors and through the teachings of Christ we could bring change to those we come into contact with by simply loving them. The greatest of all the commandments is to love. Without love this world would be a dark place. If you are the one going through troubles be sure to reach out for someone you can count on to be there for you and who will offer Christian love. If you are the one someone’s reaching for, be sure to love them with patience, and compassion. It’s not always easy, but love isn’t easy. In fact the verse says ‘Love suffers long.’This verse is how 1 Corinthians: 13:4 starts. No matter how hard our day has been, how horrific our situation, we must always remember that love endures all things. Of course we will fail someone and we’ll get angry, or frustrated, or short-tempered that’s apart of life. We aren’t perfect and we won’t always see eye to eye, but loving someone regardless is a command not a suggestion by Christ. Failure to do so is a sin, and as all sin is equal at the foot of the cross, consider that the next time you turn a blinds eye, or choose to ‘hate’ someone. To know God is to know love, and if we are truly going to call ourselves Christians, we must understand that loving someone is not based on the things we like about them, the things we have in common, or anything else for that matter. If we are going to fix this world it’s going to be through love, it’s going to be through apologetics, not by taking up arms, or turning our backs on people. Jesus never turned his back on anyone even when he knew they were wrong. He loved everyone, and died for everyone not just the marginally good people. If you’re feeling emotionally compromised remove yourself from a situation so you can come back fresh and ready to love. We only get one chance for a good impression and as a Christian we should strive for every first impression to be a Christ Like impression. So go out there and love your socks out. Be kind and loving to all whom you encounter. Spread joy and love and change the world one person at a time.

Prayer Requests

Prayer Requests

While I had intended a completely different topic, over the last few days so much trouble and sickness, and hurt has come to my attention. Sometimes we need to stop what we’re doing and realize that there’s so much more going on around us that we rarely see. I was sitting around yesterday with my cup around 1/3 filled when one by one the emotional flood started to come in and before I knew it, my cup was flowing over the sides. With no power to change a single situation, and with no possible advice to give, the only thing I could do was pray. So today, this post will be short and sweet, and straight to the point. We are taught to pray each and every day, all day about all things. We are told to pray for every one of our needs, our wants, our desires, and more importantly then ourselves, pray for others.

Today’s post is just to remind you to take a moment in silent reflection, and pray for everything going on around you. Follow these verses and remember to always way.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 – Pray without ceasing.

Philippians 4:6 – Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Romans 8:26 – Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

James 5:16 – Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

No matter how dark things look, or how great things are, never stop praying. Never stop turning to God for everything we have. Never stop praying and turning to one another because the power of prayer is powerful.
