God’s Will is Sovereign, Free Will Still Remains

I have been putting some thought into the idea of ‘free will’. Free will is defined by Google Definitions as “the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one’s own discretion.” From the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked the Father to take this burden from me. Matthew 26:29 “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Jesus, though the Son of the Father, was given free will. Jesus was facing certain death, and even with that fate, Jesus has the choice to take himself off the cross at any point, but he chose to fulfill the Fathers plan. God’s will is sovereign, but even as God’s will is above all, he does not ever force our actions. 

I have waited a long time for people in my life to walk with God. There have been people I have hoped and prayed to God, that they would change their ways, change their hearts. I have prayed, and though my prayers have yet to be answered, I know that the Lord is still working in people’s lives. Even though I have not been able to see those changes, I have faith in God’s plans. Life isn’t easy sometimes, and sometimes life requires an incredible amount of patience. 

I have wondered for many years what the purpose of all my troubles have been. The death I have seen, the loss I’ve experienced, the heart break that shattered the hope in which I once had, all of it is within God’s will. I cannot walk with the Lord and be split down the middle. I cannot expect to live this life free of burdens. No matter how tough life is, the hurt that comes my way, I must remember that in all things the Glory of God must be the forefront. The burdens someone faces will never be in vain. God has given me the choice how to handle both the blessings given to me from above, and the struggles and attacks from the Devil. At no point in time can I ever say my bad choices, or handling of situations was because “the Devil made me do it.” The Lords will is sovereign and I must remember that I am a tool in God’s toolshed, and I must remain ready to answer His call. Jesus is the great healer, and no matter the troubles faced, we have the ability to heal. God heals the broken hearted, and God finds the lost. 

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said this “Since the day Jesus spoke the words, there is no longer anyone who is so forsake, who is so alone, to say that nobody has ever offered me help. Whoever has heard these words of Christ and still talks in such a way is lying and shows scorn and contempt for the words of our Lord.” Jesus cast a broad net with those words. The word All. There is no narrow hallway, this is such a wide circle that it literally would include everyone in the whole world. Who here hasn’t labored? Who here hasn’t been heavily burdened at some point or another?” 

It is hope we have received, and we burden not in vain, for the Lord Jesus sacrificed for all so we may not suffer for not. Jesus had the same free will we all have. Should we not rest assured that his words have had lasting and reverberating hope for our lives as well? No, I have not suffered for nothing, for all of my suffering, all of my hardships have prepared me for tomorrow. Everything I have endured has given me knowledge of the next step, the ability to face the next hardship with hope of the Lord beside me. No one person lives life hopeless. The Devil will try to convince you of such lies, but that’s all the Devil has to offer is lies. Now, do not mistake, the Devil has power, the Devil has legions as his will, but the fight of the Christian warrior comes with Jesus, and the legion of Angels on our side. Who shall we fear if we have the Lord on our side? We are forgiven of our sins, we have nothing to lose and nothing to fear. Who are we to hide from the fight? We must stand tall and know we are called to a higher standard of living in this world.

Bonhoeffer also says this “Politics are not the task of a Christian.

The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children.

Only he who believes is obedient and only he who is obedient believes.

The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.

One act of obedience is better than one hundred sermons.

If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction.

A god who let us prove his existence would be an idol.

Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility.

It is very easy to overestimate the importance of our own achievements in comparison with what we owe others.

To endure the cross is not tragedy; it is the suffering which is the fruit of an exclusive allegiance to Jesus Christ.” 

If we are to be the fruit of Jesus we must understand that the seed cannot remain a seed, but must transform into something more. We must be willing to undergo the transformation and grow beyond the seed. We must nurture our relationship with Christ, water it with the Holy Spirt, and let ourselves sprout and grow, and spread new seeds. Do not believe your labor is in vain, for this life is fleeting, the seasons come and go, but in faithfulness, the works of man shall be rewarded in Heaven. Works are not the beginning of truth, but the result of the truth that we are not saved by works, but by faith, by grace, by the Love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the only way to the Father. Forged in the fires of trials, we grow stronger, we are sharpened by the trials of man, to wield the strongest weapon against the darkness, the Word, the Holy Word of God which demons flea before the Cross, and we kneel. Our choices remain, and as Christ chose every second to remain on the cross for each and every one of us, we too much choose every second to remain with Christ in our fight till the day comes when the father calls us home.

Tipping Point

How long will you travel down the road you’re on before you make a change in your life? Will you wait until you don’t have any other option? Sadly most people will refuse to change until the choice is no longer theirs to make. It seems the path towards self-destruction is a path that must run its course. Sadly I have watched people I’ve cared about hop on that train, and no matter what anyone did they had to ride along till it hit the brick wall, or as most people call it, hitting rock bottom.

What is it about that course that so many fall prey too? The human mind is a tricky thing, and when we truly take some time to think about it, why would anyone stay on such a self-destructive path? I think the answer is simple, and yet complicated at the same time. The simple answer is of coursesin, but the difficult answer is the complexity of the human brain. I think there’s something that happens inside the human brain that gets confused. Take a bad relationship for example. The whole world might realize a relationship is bad news, but the one person who doesn’t is the person in the middle of it. There can be emotional abuse, an over controlling element, or even physical abuse, and yet someone will stay in that situation till, they hit rock bottom. Much of that has to do with self-esteem, a notion of worthlessness, and an idea that no one else could ever love them, so it’s better to be mistreated by someone who ‘loves me’ than to be alone. Then there’s the alcoholic, substance abuse addicts, and workaholics who drive themselves towards destruction and rarely turn their own train before it smashes into the wall.

What can we do though, for those people who seem to be on those trains? Sadly the answer is not much, and any intervention may be a dangerous idea for the relationship. People often lash out when an intervention is staged. Admitting there’s a problem is incredibly difficult and always the first step to any real change. Every 12 step program is laid out very similar, and the first step is always the same.

  1. Admitting powerlessness over the addiction
  2. Believing that a higher power (in whatever form) can help
  3. Deciding to turn control over to the higher power
  4. Taking a personal inventory
  5. Admitting to the higher power, oneself, and another person the wrongs done
  6. Being ready to have the higher power correct any shortcomings in one’s character
  7. Asking the higher power to remove those shortcomings
  8. Making a list of wrongs done to others and being willing to make amends for those wrongs
  9. Contacting those who have been hurt, unless doing so would harm the person
  10. Continuing to take personal inventory and admitting when one is wrong
  11. Seeking enlightenment and connection with the higher power via prayer and meditation
  12. Carrying the message of the 12 Steps to others in need

 

While the 12 steps list a higher power, we as Christians must remember that it is God, Jesus Christ that can help us. No matter what situation you find yourself in, there are a few things that need to be mentioned. First, the creator of the universe loves you. Jesus Christ died for you, and you are special to Him. Second, you do not have to stay on the road you’re on. There is always help out there and all you have to do is ask for it. However, you must be willing to hear the truth, and face the challenge of making the change, which of course will not be easy. Third, you must trust that God can work out any bad situation, and there is something good to be taken from it. No matter the horrible things you’ve experienced in your life, i.e. rape, abuse (physical or emotional), loss, health issues, addictions, etc.) no matter what it is, there is something to be gained for it, and used in a positive way. Fourth, GOD DID NOT CAUSE YOUR SUFFERING, I cannot understate this. God is not in the habit of causing suffering in our lives. We must understand the nature of a sinful world, and a world endowed with free will. People choose to act how they want to. People choose to prey on the weak, to take other peoples power for their own. People choose to give in to the sin nature of this world. People choose to allow addictions to take hold by starting in the first place. People choose to rape, to abuse, to control, because it masks their own insecurities, and they themselves are not following Christ. We often want to blame God, instead of blaming the Devil. We want to ask God why He didn’t save us, and the truth is, he probably tried. We expect God to send us a miraculous intervention, where the truth is, there were probably people there who would have been willing to help, and maybe even tried to help. The problem is, sometimes we slap away the hands that try to help us.

It’s said we as people don’t truly change till we reach the precipice, the bottom of the barrel, the brick wall, but the truth is, you don’t have to wait that long. Addiction can be anything to include staying in bad abusive relationships, but there is hope. 1 Corinthians 10:13-14 (NKJV)13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.” When we put anything before God that is our idol, and we are in essence worshiping that in which stands between God and us. If it’s work, or a substance, video games, whatever you can fill in the blank that takes the majority of your focus, there’s a time to walk away. Change is possible any time, anywhere, but YOU have to be willing to make that step towards change.

I have lost two wives to adultery and I remember asking what I had done to deserve it. I asked God why I was being punished, and what I didn’t realize at the time was it wasn’t God, no, it was Satan that had intervened in my life and brought destruction upon my home. 1 John 2:16 (NKJV)16 “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” Every day people endure hardships, and they endure the pain of this life, and every day people cry out to the Father and ask what they have done, why did they deserve such horrible things, but the fact is, it’s a sinful world, and there will be troubles. God does not force people into His will and in turn God does not force people to sin. God did not force sin upon this world, but people choose to sin. As scripture says, God will ALWAYS give you a way out. It may not be easy, but God isn’t in the business of making life easy, but it is always what is right. “Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.”(Albus Dumbledore)

If you’re in a position you want to change, or need to change, ask yourself, have you been talking to God about it? Has an opportunity to change been presented to you but you’ve not taken it? Is the situation truly bad, or is it that you’re just not happy? Are you putting your attention to objects, substances or people? No matter what’s going on in your life there is always hope in Christ. Remember that as you might have fallen victim at the hands of others, remember it’s free will that causes so much pain. The same free will that causes you pain, is also the same free will that allows you to walk away and turn to God. 1 Corinthians 6:12“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” Don’t give away the power God has given to you. Don’t allow other people to take your happiness from you. When you trust in God you are given joy, and nothing can steal away your Joy. If you are in an abusive relationship, get help. If you are addicted to (blank) get help. Don’t walk through this life living in misery, there’s help out there for you. Be willing to make the hard decision for the hard change, but always turn to God for guidance. God will hear you, and God will answer you, so keep an eye open for it, and listen to the Holy Spirit guiding you. Have faith and don’t forget to love first, love God.

God, the Ultimate Dungeon Master

If any of you are like me then at some point in your life you sat around a room with a whole bunch of weird looking dice, a character sheet, some assorted books, and a ton of caffeine, enough to fuel an army for two days. I was a Dungeons & Dragons nerd growing up. Recently I was talking to a good friend of mine about the difference between Calvinism, and Arminianism. Without getting to much into the theological debate which I am just now starting to understand, it’s basically predestination, or free will. Where are we in our faith? While this point isn’t really important in the grand scheme of things, it’s trusting in God and knowing the path to salvation. While I do believe people have free will and we are not predestined in every aspect, I do believe some events are going to happen no matter what you do. As I stated in my recent conversation, “Kinda like an RPG. You’re gonna face the dragon, what you do is up to you.” (Arrow Preacher) Isn’t it an interesting thought that God is a master mathematician? In our life the vast majority of everything we see and touch can be found in math. If God were able to decide the percentages on every single decision you make by a percentage chance, and thus the future is slightly altered to suit God’s inevitable plan. But then my favorite theory, is actually the multi-verse theory. For every conceivable action we can make we do, and so on and so forth. A string followed by God who has the ability to pier through the looking glass past present and future. While all of this is purely personally theoretical, I will say for sure, God is the Alpha and the Omega. God see’s all and whether God is more of a hands off God, or God’s influence is in every single decision we make, it really makes no difference. God is God, Jesus Christ is our Savior, and in His blood we are washed of our sins.

Psalm 135:6 “Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.”

Psalm 115:3 “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.”

 Daniel 4:35 “All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, But He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand Or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’

 Matthew 19:26 “And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

 We must learn to be steadfast in our life toward God. While each and every day we are faced with new challenges, new obstacles, we must always look to the Dungeon Master and when we are given the choice how we are going to behave, we need to remember the DM is always watching. If we are to live our lives on our path, we need to focus on what kind of character in God’s game we want to be. We have our option to how we behave. There are several alignments in the world of D&D, and when we look them over, what type of person are we? Personally I would fall in Neutral Good. I believe sometimes the law does not offer the need to do the right thing in every circumstance. I believe if a true vigilante or hero type person were to rise, I would support that. I think sometimes in the pursuit of justice a particular eye should be viewed. Man often makes laws that don’t follow God’s laws. Once upon a time worshiping Christ was against the law in some ancient countries, and believe it or not, there are still countries today where the church is still persecuted. Thus I hold fast to the need to be Neutral Good. If Christianity were to become illegal I would continue to sidestep the law in the pursuit to worship. I believe sometimes the law doesn’t hold what’s morally right based on scripture. When you follow the Lord and stay true to the Gospel you can’t go wrong.

Man is fallible but the word of God is enduring. While we are told to follow the law of the land I don’t believe this was a black and white standing. While early Christians were following the rule of Rome, they practiced their faith some in private so they weren’t hunted. This tells me that not all laws made are justified laws, and yet we must respect God’s decisions to allow the leaders to be leaders. That being said, as a Christian I believe we must always put the word of God before the laws and words of men, and thus, Neutral Good. Sometimes bending or breaking the laws of man for the good of God’s word is necessary. Have faith and follow God. Remember when you get to your dragon, you alone have the choice as to what you are going to do.
